Community Council elections: Your chance to play a vital role in decision making
Residents throughout Aberdeen have the chance to embrace a key role in local decision making as this year’s Community Council elections draw closer.
Opportunities to join Community Councils throughout the city will be in the spotlight at two information sessions taking place over the next week.
Prospective candidates can find out more about the election process and the role of Community Councils on Wednesday, August 22, and Monday, August 27. Both sessions will run from 7pm at the Town House and are open to all.
Nominations close on 27 September for anyone wishing to put themselves forward for a Community Council place.
Elections will only be required in the event of nominations exceeding the number of available seats and October 25 has been set as the polling date.
Cllr Jenny Laing, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, said: “Community Councils play a crucial part in local democracy and the work of the volunteer members is hugely appreciated.
“The election period provides an opportunity for more people to get involved, people of all ages and backgrounds from all of our communities in the city. I would encourage anyone with an interest in local issues and improving their community as well as the city as a whole to join the information sessions and learn more about how everyone has the chance to play their part.
“As a council we value the input of Community Councils, part of the wider focus on empowering residents to shape the future.
“We have had great success with participatory budgeting, which provides funding from the Council to deliver projects that are identified and driven by communities, and that will continue to grow and evolve. This is an exciting time to be getting involved in local decision making and there’s a real opportunity to make a difference.”
