Butterflies sculpture lands in Aberdeen Central Library

Aberdeen Central Library will host a paper sculpture made from books in a unique exhibition throughout July.

'The Butterflies' features paper butterflies 'flying' from an open book and was sculpted from an old reference book by an anonymous artist.

The sculpture will be on display in the Adult Lending Department of Aberdeen Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct from today (Friday 03 July) until Friday 31 July 2015.

Although anonymous, the female artist who created the sculpture became known in Edinburgh for gifting a series of book sculptures to various cultural institutions between 2011 and 2013. 'The Butterflies' was donated to a charity auction for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2014 where it was purchased by the Mackenzie family in Edinburgh.

In March this year, the mystery artist revealed plans to make one final book sculpture using contributions from members of the public and has invited people to submit their own butterfly for the next sculpture.

Aberdeen City Council's Convener of Education and Children's Services Councillor Angela Taylor, said: "This is a unique and delicate piece of artwork and it's great to see it here in Aberdeen. And, the prospect of creating your own butterfly for the mysterious artist to use in her next sculpture is very exciting and the free events to coincide with the exhibition will be a source of inspiration for all involved."

Dr Colin Mackenzie, owner of The Butterflies sculpture and manager of the Butterflies on the Move tour, said: "I'm delighted that this sculpture will be given a warm welcome in Aberdeen and I hope it will inspire many people to create their own paper butterfly for the new sculpture."

Further information on how to make and donate a paper butterfly is available in all city libraries.

A series of free events and workshops for adults, and children and their parents/carers will be held at libraries across the city to coincide with the exhibition. Further information on the full events programme is available in all libraries or at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/libraries
